Kate answered the knock at the door. “Come in. We’re still getting ready.”

Closing the door behind her, Val looked at Kate and then over at Laura. “We are just going to the hotel bar for food?”

“Yes,” Kate said. “Why?”

“Well. It’s just suddenly I feel rather underdressed.”

“Oh.” Kate looked across at Laura standing at the mirror. It was the first time she had dared to look at her fully while they had changed. She wore a light blue sheath dress. A short set of pearls rested against her throat. They matched the earrings she clipped to each lobe. Kate smiled as Laura looked across.

“You look wonderful,” Kate said, before she had fully realized the words.

Laura repositioned her earing and smiled back. “Thank you. So do you.”

The bathroom door opened, and Val turned to Peg as she stepped out. “These two think it’s a black tie dress code downstairs.”

“I know, I’m sure I saw pie and mash on the menu, not lobster.”

Kate picked up her shrug and put it across her shoulders.

“You all look great,” Laura said, reaching for her clutch bag. “Come on, we don’t want them to run out of oysters before we get there.”

As they came down the stairs, the receptionist called over, a telephone receiver hanging from her fingers. “Are one of you ladies called Margaret? Peg?” She lifted the telephone onto the raised counter as Peg moved forward from the group. “There’s a call for you.”

The other three watched, as her worried face became full of smiles. She put down the phone and made her way back across. “That was George. He must have remembered where we’re staying. He’s invited me out—for a meal.” She glanced between the women. “Do you three mind?”

They all shook their heads. “Far be it for us to stand in the way of true love,” Val said.

Peg beamed and squeezed her hand. “He’ll be here in half an hour.” She looked down at her blouse and skirt. “I need to go and change. Thank goodness I brought that black dress.” She started back up the stairs calling behind her. “See, what did I tell you? Always be prepared.”

“So, a table for three then?” Laura said.
